TO LAST A LIFETIME

FORGED STEEL

Using an approach of ‘If you use beautiful tools, you make beautiful things’, Conrad decided to develop kitchen implements so as to bring functional art into people’s homes.

Our first made objects were tools. We developed our values around judgements of function that became our instinctive sense of beauty. Ugly forms didn’t work. As a result of selective evolutionary principles, our driving force for development was and is a striving for beauty. Our generation is cut off from the tools and implements that keep us alive – we don’t know how to use them. The tasks we do are very abstract and unfulfilling. Early tools give us a strong sense of security and understanding. There is no design, only a feeling of “this is good”.

AND STEEL

FOR THE LOVE OF COOKING

HAND-FORGED IN CAPE TOWN

Visual artist and blacksmith Conrad Hicks works on these home-use tools from his forge in Obs, Cape Town. A slight variation in texture and decorative finish will occur from product to product and design changes may take place as our products develop over time.

NO SOAP STAMP

All the pans are heat treated with beeswax that penetrates the steel, creating an almost non-stick layer. If maintained properly it will remain naturally non-stick.

NATURALLY NON-STICK

Our pans are ideal for cooking on the stove top and well as baking at high temperatures in the oven. They are designed to hold and distribute heat evenly for the perfect cook every time.

BLACKSMITH

BY CONRAD HICKS

Conrad Hicks was born in Cape Town in 1966. He studied Art and Design at The Cape Technikon and graduated with a distinction in 1986.

Conrad specializes in hand-forged metal work and uses this technique in his sculptures as well as in his architectural and interior design projects. His forge is housed in The Bijou, an old Art Deco cinema in Observatory, which he bought and began restoring in 1998.

Conrad’s designs are influenced by the time he spends at the forge developing his own methods, “My best products come directly from a personal exploration of the materials and process”. He remains true to the craft, avoiding viewing welding as valueless with no symbolic meaning. Conrad asserts that all traditional blacksmithing jointing methods have an innate metaphorical meaning, adding to the final symbolic meaning of the finished form.
